Onar: dreams from the future

From Finland comes the Onar brand in which the designer, Irene Kostas, has poured all her unconventional style and multiple inspirations, including her love for the environment

Ethical fur – the re-use of vintage furs or fur from animals that lived in freedom – is at the heart of the contemporary collections by Irene Kostas, together with a musical playlist blaring from her workshop. The collections use existing materials coming from a careful choice between wild Finnish skins, recycled vintage furs (re-cut and re-dyed) and shearling, a by-product of farming.
The collections are strictly handmade in Finland and Greece (areas that for centuries have specialized in the handcrafted tradition of leather), using the finest, ethically sourced Italian materials, vegetable dyed and 100% chrome free.

The designer (and DJ) of Greek-Finnish origin created the Onar brand (in ancient Greek, “dream” and the name of her residency in a Helsinki club) in 2014, inspired by the functional design of the Nordic countries, by the richness of the Byzantine culture and US contemporary art. The inauguration in March 2016 of her flagship boutique in Helsinki (in Erottajankatu 6) aims at continuing the path towards a real lifestyle brand, following the international launch and distribution in Japan, China, Hong Kong, United Kingdom and the United States, including at Opening Ceremony in New York.

The materials, colours and geometries in the new SS17 collection called “Metamorphosis” feature a fun and colourful mixture of bomber jackets, vests, loose jackets in leather and fur, as well as clothing details in a game of sophisticated and casual shapes and lines. The richness and sensuality of the materials contrasts with the clean, geometric, almost minimalist design. The key colours are candy shades, also in colour-blocking, which light up the outfit in a palette ranging from orange to light blue, passing through grass green, as well as black and white. The range is completed by hats, clutches, neck warmers, all waiting to be touched and absolutely unconventional.
